This historic cottage is located in the heart of the village of Croston, directly opposite the banks of the River Yarrow. Set over three storeys, it has four-poster beds, free-standing baths and a charmingly quirky vibe, and is ideal for couples, friends and families looking to explore this delightful part of Lancashire.

Built around 1700, the property has been modernised while retaining heaps of character. You’ll step straight into the beamed kitchen/diner, which has a slate floor and a brick chimney with an open fire. This is a lovely space for socialising while cooking, with a wooden settle and a CD for some music while you chat. There’s a snug with a sofa and TV, plus two bedrooms, on the first floor. Both bedrooms have king-size, four-poster beds and ample clothes storage, and share a lovely bathroom with a roll-top slipper bath and separate shower. On the top floor, with its steeply sloping ceilings, you’ll find a spacious lounge with a TV, DVD and video, as well as an array of comfortable seating and a wall of books and ornaments. Also on this level are the third bedroom, a super-king-size, and another lovely bathroom with a slipper bath. If you feel like relaxing outdoors, there’s a courtyard with a BBQ: a great place for an aperitif or a meal.

The picture-postcard village of Croston has interesting shops and a range of places to eat as well as historic houses, a church that dates back to William the Conqueror and a 15th century packhorse bridge. Great days out include a visit to the antiques centre and cafe at the Tudor manor house Heskin Hall, 4.5 miles, the National Trust’s Rufford Old Hall, 4.5 miles, and a canoe safari at Martin Mere Wetland Centre, 6 miles.

A lovely house with great character, beautifully presented. It's like being in an art gallery with comfy beds, everywhere you look there is an item of interest to ponder, including in the courtyard garden. A problem with the flush mechanism of a toilet was quickly sorted by the friendly and helpful owners.

Dalton Cottage is lovely, old, a little quirky, very comfortable and in a really pretty, friendly small town. Everyone - the cottage owners, the neighbours, people in the street and the pubs - were so friendly and welcoming. We want to retire there!
