Cumbria & the Lake District Holiday Guide
The jewel in the Cumbrian crown is undoubtedly the Lake District, yet the mountains and valleys of the National Park are not the only reasons to holiday in this most north-westerly of English counties. The unspoilt coastline to the west and Eden Valley to the east both merit some time to see just what the crowds who head to the tourist hot-spots are missing!
But for those who love the great outdoors it’s hard to exaggerate the beauty of the Lake District or the number and diversity of opportunities it offers to get outside and get active. Water sports, climbing, sailing, and hiking are a small selection of the things you can do on holiday in Cumbria and the Lake District.
The public has open access to over half the land within the National Park, meaning you can explore to your heart’s content (or until your feet can’t take it anymore!). Or if you’d prefer a better known route, follow one of the many trails so perfectly described and illustrated in Wainwright’s iconic guides.
Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled when out and about for the red squirrel and colonies of sundew and butterwort, two of the carnivorous plants native to Britain. Cumbria is also home to a range of bird species, making it perfect for bird watchers.
The pretty towns and villages of Cumbria and The Lakes provide a more restful alternative to the outdoor pursuits of the mountains and lakes. Tea rooms, cafes and pubs sit alongside craft shops and independent food stores giving you endless opportunities to browse - and buy!
This glorious corner of England offers so many places to go and things to do. Whatever time of year you come here you’ll be enthralled by the surroundings, finding something new each time you visit in the woodlands, lakes, hills and valleys. Explore the unusual rock formations and caves, and indigenous species of plants and wildlife. Enjoy the lakes and waterfalls for sport or leisure. Whatever you want from your holiday here, you can expect a warm welcome wherever you go.
